== Wat ==

It was a time of despair, the comfort of stupidity we had learned to come to terms with have long since disappeared. These were mad times. We stared into the dark void of the future, scratched our balls, and asked ourselves, 'what's next?'.

Also, with no job prospects in the NL in sight, loup will be leaving the country soon for a while. This is going to be a good bye party of sorts.

We're deciding if it's the weekend of 4-5th or 25-26th, preference leans strongly to the latter date

== Waar ==

Gido has offered a zuipkeet as a possible location. This is a modified OV bus with room for hacking. Facilities are present, the area is security hardened with SELinux for parties and such. This saves us the trouble of needing party tents, though we might do one or two for shits and giggles. There is plenty of space for camping out too. Picts to come.

There are no plans for an on-site grocery store, but there are plenty of stores with decent opening hours and stock in the surrounding area. Check out Wieringerwerf or Medemblik.

The power supply on site will be 230V (+6%/-10%) AC @ 50Hz, all of this comes from generators.

We'll be providing sockets that will accept standard north european plugs, better known as Schuko aka CEE 7/4. If your caravan/camper/car/spaceship has a lead with a 16A CEEform plug, please make sure to bring an adapter.

Please be considerate when hooking up power-hungry equipment such as coffee machines, microwaves, particle accelerators, etc. If you trip the fuse and cut your neighbour's power, they will likely not appreciate it much (nor would the power team).

Please bring around 20m or more of 3x2.5mm2 (rated 16A, 3-wire, grounded) cable to hook up to our distribution boxen.

== Network ==
For the wired network, please bring 20+ meters Cat5 cable (with RJ45 8p8c connectors on either end.. the regular stuff). Longer is better, as this allows you to live further away from distribution points.

There will of course also be wireless network available in the common flavors b/g and possibly a/n, which we'll inform you about when the network team has these things figured out.

Eth0:2010 Summer is a planned outdoor hacker convention for coming summer. Details on date, location, pricing, activities, talks and etcetera are to be determined. We are already working on this next event, and you are free to join and do whatever you want to. [[User:Psy|psy]] and [[User:buZz|me]] had the idea to build a gateway on-site out of everyones hsdpa/umts/gprs sim mobile devices.

This wont be the 'normal' [[Service:Internet_uplink]], but is certainly fun to try and play around with. :)

==Technical details==

The idea is to provide one gateway that does some kind of round robin scheduling over a variety of gprs/umts enabled mobile devices.

What kind of traffic to we allow? ssh? proxied http access?

===Method 1: simple stupid===

The simplest way would be to connect all the devices we can get our hands on to one box.

Disadvatages:
* everybody has to give their phone to us.
* there is a limit on how many devices you can connect to one box by usb and especially bluetooth.
* totally impractical ;)

===Method 2: double-gateway system===

Everybody that wants to help runs their own plain-old-gateway. However..the gateway is firewalled, and only one box is allowed to access the internet via it. That box will be the 'main-gateway' that everybody is going to use. This main-gateway will distribute the traffic over the other gateways in some logical way:

[regular client] --> [main-gateway] ==>> [mobile gateways] ==>> [internet]

Advantages:
* Everybody with a mobile device can easily join and keep their phone

Disadvantages:
* Bad traffic distribution. The traffic distribution will be connection based: an eshtablised tcp/udp session will 'stay' on one mobile gateway. Some gateways will get cluttered up while others are idle.

===Method 3: double-gateway with tunneled traffic===

In an ideal situation we would distributed the traffic on a packet basis, rather than a connection base.

To acomplish this we need a vpn-server on the internet.

[regular client] --> [main-gateway] ====(Encapsulated packets)===>> [mobile gateways] ==>> [internet] ==>> [vpn-server gateway] ===(normal traffic)===> [internet]

The main-gateway will encapsulate the packets and sends them over the gateways in a almost perfect distribution.

The vpn-server gateway will receive those packets, all with different source adresses offcourse, de-encapsulate them, NAT the connections to the apropriate source adres and then send them over the internet.

The reply packets will be send back to the mobile gateways in a simular way.

What kind of protocol is suitable for this? Remember we dont want encryption or any fancy stuff..we just want to distribute the packets over multiple gateways.

Simple plain old IP-IP encapsulation should do it, right? The distribution can be done with iptables-magic, but i'm sure there are many other ways.

This method can also be used to bundle normal uplinks together. As long has internet, we can bundle it to our network!
